The National Writing Project outlines the role of the Tech Liaison as meeting these four duties.
- Communicating regularly online with the Technology Liaisons Network leadership team members and other technology liaisons; sites should keep in mind that the technology liaison requires adequate access to the Internet and email.
- Attending the NWP Annual Meeting.
- Supporting site leadership in assessing the site’s technology needs and reporting how technology supports its core work in the site’s Application for Continued Funding.
- Providing a link between the Technology Liaisons Network and the writing project site that supports the site’s relationship with national technology initiatives. Site leaders should plan for ongoing communication with the technology liaison so that he or she can perform this role.
Right now…
As of right now, I feel I’m doing an adequate job fulfilling our site’s tech liaison needs as defined in item 3.
I’ve been excited to plan and execute a course of study of the Summer Institute program, and I look forward to evaluating and revising that course for this summer. I think that moving our focus from blogging and digital publication to multimodal writing and the tools necessary for manipulating digital media is an excellent idea and will make the tech portion of our SI attractive to potential fellows.
I’ve also been able to facilitate more involvement between the New Teacher Institute and our sites tech programs. NTI now has a web presence on our muwp1 server. This winter, I will also present a few ideas from our SI’s fall follow up programs to enrich the NTI program.
I feel like our site’s web presence is moving in a positive direction. While I think development of content is slow, I feel like I have built a good infrastructure for hosting content. As we begin to gather materials for promoting next summer’s Institute, I think the usefulness of our website will be more apparent.
I am struggling to complete items 1 and 4. I have been following the Tech Liaison’s network’s message boards as well as postings on nwp.org, but I don’t feel that I am connected throughly with the Network’s leadership.
For the future…
I feel the best way to continue our site’s growth in the realm of technology is to develop a solid, perennial tech team. There are a handful of new TCs from this year’s institute who would make lovely additions to a tech squadron. I specifically need a collaborator and assistant who can take an active role in planning and executing the tech program. I would like to draft a list of duties and expectations for Dr. Lumpkin to approve at our January leadership meeting so that I may hire a TC to fulfill this role. I would also like to develop a relationship with at least one to several more TCs who can serve as assistants during Summer Institute and other programs on an ad hoc basis. I would like for these positions to function on a per diem basis. While they would be important parts of individual programs, the would not be called upon for year-round duties as the assitant position would be.
When I was discussing the Tech Liaison’s Network with a representative at the Annual Meeting, he suggested the best way to get involved with the Network was to attend their periodic functions and meetings. I think the Web Presence retreat would be as good a place as any to start this networking and begin meeting other Tech Liaisons in the network. The TLN also has an active Ning that I should join and be a part of. At the Annual Meeting, it became apparent a great deal of discussion and participation is happening not on the NWP message boards, but on the TLN Ning. Joining the community there would be good for networking, as well as help me explore the potential for Nings–a web technology I’m interested in for SI and my classroom.
